'Never Known' is the 23-minute auditory sensation of Sterile Garden, the sonic mind of Portland, Maine-based artist and Basement Tapes boss Jacob DeRaadt.
Active since 2006, Sterile Garden has released works on Monorail Trespassing, No Rent, and most recently Irrational Tentent. Jacob and RM first crossed paths on a Network Glass / Forest Management tour in February of 2018. A mutual love for tape music and textural art kept us in touch, and we are now honored to share this exciting and fresh Sterile Garden recording.
The tape is classically split into two simple sides, each serving as a platform on which DeRaadt's collages are displayed. Field recordings and synthesizer are immediately apparent. Sprinkles of poetic vocal lines also grace parts of the album, adding a touch of intimacy to an already warm sound. Earthy and unknown sounds shift in and out of the stereo field, making Never Known an enveloping listen as the temperatures outside drop. DeRaadt possesses an uncommon amount of restraint in his work, making the climactic surges of harsher noise even more effective.
Available on limited cassette with beautiful artwork provided by Sterile Garden.
