It is a rare ability for an artist to produce music this arresting in its simple beauty, yet the person behind this album masterfully uses dense string loops and tape noise to transport the listener to a heavenly place. These worlds are at once alien and unfamiliar, yet strikingly luminous and awe-inspiring. I am extremely eager to hear more work from this gifted musician. Favorite track: What If.

While Reserve Matinee's network is global, we're always excited and proud to highlight artists who also hail from our small corner of the world - the American Midwest. Especially when those artists exhibit exceptionally deep minds, intriguing stories, and scene-defying careers.

Somewhere in southern Indiana, the soft glow of a desktop computer sits in front of BAKGROUND, a young producer named Cory who prefers to keep a low profile and has never performed live, despite our recent and continual attempts. After a simple connection on Soundcloud, the Midwest connection was made via e-mail and a new friendship began. This is the first of multiple BAKGROUND releases on Reserve Matinee.

A strong and deep discography of jungle and 90s-style breakbeat can be found through a Google search, with recent EPs 'Fantasies' and 'First Time' getting pressed onto 12" wax by UK labels who have caught on. Releases like 'saved data pts. I and II' show the Indiana producer's ambient side, which happens to be some of the deepest work we've heard in years. Samples from video games and 90s VHS tapes are just a few of the sound sources used in production. What sets Cory apart, however, is his uncanny ability to carve out and dig deep into human emotion; an aspect of music-making that has nothing to do with gear or approach. We are more than ecstatic to present 'Grey World', an album of gentle embrace and melancholy. Welcome to the world of BAKGROUND.

The sort of music that is beyond time. The sort of music that you feel more than you hear. I love the fact that vaporwave/dreampunk projects like these have such extremely evocative aesthetics they directly fill your mind with sensations you didn't know you had. You'd maybe think it relies on that solely, but it's coupled with gorgeous musicianship + intense production ideas. The volume and spaces it creates just pull you in instantly whatever your initial mood was. Still stunning to this day. SUPRAQUENCER
